The death of a 11-year old girl child in Simdega in Ranchi has raised questions about how the ration shops and whole public distribution system in the state is working.
According to the news reports, the local ration shop owner had cancelled the ration card of this 11-year-old girl with the excuse that it is not linked with the Aadhaar card yet.
The girl thereafter, it is said, could not secure food for herself and starved to death. After the embarrassing incident came to light, the state Food and Supplies Minister has ordered inquiry into the matter. Meanwhile, the girl child’s mother told media persons that her child could not secure food for herself over past many days.
She said that even the schools had not been opening due to Durga Puja festival and thus this kept the child deprived of the food.
The family were surviving on minor forest produce, she said.>
