As it appeared that Dera Sacha Sauda and all issues surrounding it may have taken a backseat, a statement from a BJP legislator from Haryana changed it all.
The legislator has not only sought compensation for the persons involved in Panchkula violence after the arrest of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, he also defended Honeypreet Insan, adopted daughter of Gurmeet Ram Rahim.
BJP MLA Kulwant Bazigar wants the cases against Honeypreet, Aditya Insaan and others involved in the violence to be withdrawn.
“They all are innocent and framed under false charges,” he said.
Defending the rioters, he claimed that during the riots, police opened fire on “innocent” Dera followers.
However, the whole episode clearly depicts a totally different picture; following the arrest of convicted rapist Ram Rahim, the violence stirred in Panchkula claimed at least 40 lives and official records indicate damage to state property worth Rs 200 crore.
Arguing that the Dera has “contributed to the society” by donating blood, donating organs and many other social activities, he said a compensation should be handed out to each person killed in the riots.
This demand, however, did not elicit a strong response from the Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. He plainly shrugged off the matter, saying that the court has not instructed for any compensation.
“This matter is in court’s supervision and the court will decide to whom compensation will be given,” he added.
Khattar went on to add that no innocent will be framed under false charges and no criminal will be spared in Dera riot case.
