Amid all talks of girl and women empowerment in India, it has been stated in a UNICEF study that nearly 6 lakh newborns die within 28 days of their birth every year.

The study has unfortunately concluded that number of newborn deaths in India was one of the highest in the world.

It has even pointed out that causes of such deaths are preventable and treatable as 80 per cent of these fatalities happen for no serious reason.

The study also claims that India has remarkably reduced the under-five mortality.

UNICEF has recently issued in its global report on neonatal mortality “Every Child Alive”.

Of the 184 countries covered in the UNICEF study, India has been ranked at 31.
