Chennai: Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju has expressed hope that 33 airports in small towns would come on the aviation map by this September through the regional connectivity scheme UDAAN.
Talking to newspersons in Chennai on the sidelines of a yoga day function, he said the scheme is designed as a demand-driven one so that States can participate in it to make it fruitful.
At present, five private air service providers have come forward to join the scheme and operate flights to smaller towns.
Mr Raju said every six months, tenders are being floated for operationalizing the scheme in unserved areas where navigable airstrips are available.
He said, more non-functional airstrips will be developed into navigable airports.
