Heavy rains in the past few days across Barak Valley of Assam and neighbouring States of Manipur and Mizoram have created flood like situation in several news areas of southern Assam. Karimganj district is the worst affected. The total number of flood-affected people in the district is around 1 lakh 20thousand. The district administration has set up 130 relief camps in the district.
According the Disaster Management Authority, all the rivers of Barak valley are flowing above the danger level. Sensing an impending emergency, the state government has directed officials of concerned departments to remain alert and carry out rescue operations.
District administration has also issued notices to those employees who are on leave to report to their respective departments with immediate effect. All field level staff has been asked to remain alert and teams from the Water Resources department are working to repair the embankments in the vulnerable areas of the valley. The administration is also ready with relief materials.
Meanwhile, people in the low-lying areas of the Cachar district have already started seeking shelter in various refugee camps across the district.
