It is because having the fire service is a mandatory condition for planes to land anywhere

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has gone on to appoint its first ever woman firefighter.

It need be mentioned that the state-run authority currently has 3310 firefighters at its airports.

It is because having the fire service is a mandatory condition for planes to land anywhere.

Now, as Kolkata girl Taniya Sanyal will join in as firefighter within a month’s time after completing training, she will the first woman in an all men bastion.

It is also to be understood that the AAI till recently did not have recruitment norms for women firefighters.

The AAI was faced with a shortage of firefighters due to expansion and new airports coming up.

The physical standards for male firefighters were having a minimum height of about 1.6 metres and at least weigh 50 kg.

The minimum weight for women firefighters was set at 40 kg and height norms were also reduced.
