After success of Ganga Gram scheme; central govt contemplating similar scheme for Yamuna
With the success of Ganga gram scheme, the government now plans to take up a similar project for the river Yamuna and the villages on its banks.
It need be mentioned that the scheme would encompass making villages on the banks of river Yamuna open defecation free as part of Swachh Bharat Mission.
In his budget speech, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley made the special mention of the Ganga gram scheme and lso took the opportunity to declare that all 4,465 villages on the banks of the river had become open defecation free.
It is on the back of this success story that the central government is now implementing the same scheme on the banks of river Yamuna.
Union Minister Uma Bharti had launched the Ganga Gram project last December as part of the government’s Namami Gange mission for holistic sanitation development in 4,470 villages on the banks of the river.
She had said back then that the Yamuna gram scheme will be part of the sanitation drive along with the solid waste management to take care of the polluting elements on the banks of the river.>
