Ahead of national election; political leaders propose ‘reservation for upper castes too’

Paswan went on to clarify that this was his and his party’s stand and not of the ruling coalition.

With national election less than a year from now, the Union consumer affairs minister and Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan has supported the idea of 15 percent reservation for poor people among the upper castes.

This is as per media reports according to which Paswan has proposed that central government set up a committee for assessment of the poor people in upper caste communities.

Paswan went on to clarify that this was his and his party’s stand and not of the ruling coalition.

It need be mentioned that even Bihar industry minister Jai Kumar Singh had been pressing for a similar demand.

He had propagated the idea of a ‘Sawarn Aayog’ (Commission for the Upper Castes) by the central government which would then look into the providing reservation to the poor among the upper castes.

These ideas are amid the fact that Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar had set up the Bihar Rajya Sawarn Aayog in 2011 to look into the grievances of the poor among the upper castes.

But the panel has yet to submit its report on the issue.
