Amid repeated provocations; Minister Babul Supriyo calls for temporary ban on artists from Pakistan

Amid repeated provocation from Pakistan, the Union Minister Babul Supriyo called for a temporary ban on Pakistani artists for working in the Hindi film industry.

Supriyo, who is a singer-turned-politician, had said Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice in the song “Ishtehar” from “Welcome To New York” must be removed and dubbed by someone else.

This he said as Khan had not been able to comprehend the need or desire to cross the border for entertainment content at a time when tensions on the India-Pakistan border had escalated.

He said that he would like to believe that artists have no boundaries but when Pakistani players can be prevented from IPL, similar can be done with artists from the country.

He pointed out that at a time when India has cornered Pakistan and even US is one step away from declaring Pakistan a terrorist nation, it is only desirable that Bollywood showed solidarity.

Supriyo said that he spoke as an Indian first and that a stand needs to be made on temporarily banning Pakistani artistes in Bollywood.

Asked if he will bring in a private members bill to ban Pakistani artistes, Supriyo declined to do it personally.
