Amid SP-BSP alliance; BSP legislator could have done cross-voting

already assured of eight seats on the basis of its strength in the Assembly

Even as the Samajwadi-Bahujan Samaj alliance may have won two parliamentary bypolls, the BSP came in for an embarrassment as one of its MLA Anil Singh indicated that he had cross-voted in favour of the BJP in the Rajya Sabha polls.

To the media outside, he was heard saying “I am with Maharaj-ji”, a claim taken to be reference to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

This was further complicated when the Deputy leader of the BSP Legislature Party Uma Shankar Singh also said he cannot confirm as to which way the legislator Anil Singh had voted.

The Unnao MLA’s vote could be crucial as it gives BJP the edge in getting a ninth Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh.

It is already assured of eight seats on the basis of its strength in the Assembly.

The Samajwadi Party, which has fielded Jaya Bachchan and the BSP, which nominated Bhimrao Ambedkar, appeared confident of winning one each of the remaining two seats.
