Apprentices hold Rail Roko; squat on tracks to protest

Even the Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had to intervene

Hundreds of students took part in the Rail Roko agitation as part of their protest to demand permanent jobs.

Though the agitation was later called off as the students decided to hold discussions with the Railway Board.

The ‘Rail Roko’ affected train movement on all the four lines between Matunga and CSMT sections.

Even the Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had to intervene and said that they will hold discussions with the students who are working as apprentices in different technical workshops of the Railways.

Train services on Central Railways Line, which were suspended this morning, resumed after the students moved out of the tracks.

Railway security forces including the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) rushed to the spot to control the crowd.

The subsequent jostling led to a few students getting injured.

According to senior railway officials, there is no provision of jobs for apprentices under the Apprentice Act.
