Army institutes Court of Inquiry against Major Gogoi; were the seniors aware??

He promised strictest action against the officer if he is found erring

The controversy around Major Gogoi meeting a girl in a hotel in Srinagar continues to rattle the Army and the government.

The Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat spoke on the issue.

He promised strictest action against the officer if he is found erring.

This statement led to institution of a court of inquiry by the Army.

It is said that Army Chief General Bipin Rawat enquired in detail how a decorated officer of Rashtriya Rifles 53 battalion, Major Leetul Gogoi, had landed in a mess that resulted in his detention by the police in Dalgate area of Srinagar.

It is also believed that General Rawat also grilled General Officer Commanding Victor Force, Commander of Sector-10 and Commanding Officer of RR 53 Bn at headquarters of Chinar Corps in this regard.

It need be recalled that Major Gogoi is not new to the controversy and had earlier been criticized for his decision to tie up the man in front of the jeep to discourage stone- pelters from throwing stones at the forces.

It was made clear that Gogoi’s area of operation in RR 53 Bn was Beerwah area of Budgam district.

The girl had been picked up from her village that falls in the operational jurisdiction of RR 02 Bn and the three had been picked up by the police from a hotel in Srinagar where the Army is not involved in any counterinsurgency operation.
