In a move that is sure to calm ruffled feathers, the Benaras Hindu University (BHU) got its first woman chief proctor in Royana Singh. The appointment followed resignation of ON Singh on moral ground in the wake of lathicharge on students on its campus.
Singh, a professor at the anatomy department of BHU’s Institute of Medical Science, was appointed by BHU vice chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi. She currently heads the women grievance cell of the varsity and was also the head of the anatomy department. She had earlier also served as deputy chief proctor.
“I will enhance dialogue with students and ensure every complaint is handled properly and addressed promptly. I will visit all the hostels and meet students to know their problems,” said Royana Singh.
The newly appointed proctor promised to enhance vigil around the hostels at night and assured to hold a weekly meetings with the students of girls’ hostel.
Following ON Singh’s resignation, the varsity administration had given the additional charge of chief proctor to dean of students Mahendra Kumar Singh on Wednesday.
As an administrative warden of women doctors’ hostel, Royana had taken initiatives to equip women doctors with self-defence techniques. Under her guidance, girls attended karate and yoga sessions after classes.
