The BJP is said to have extended support to an independent candidate in Karnataka for the parliamentary poll.
Sumalatha Ambareesh is contesting as an independent in Mandya against Nikhil Gowda of the Janata Dal Secular.
Nikhil Gowda is the son of Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s son and the grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda.
The BJP – by not fielding a candidate in Mandya and declaring their support for Sumalatha – is hoping to embarrass the Congress-JDS coalition.
Sumalatha, the wife of late superstar Ambareesh, is contesting as an independent even though her late husband was a Congressman.
The Congress gave the coalition ticket for Mandya to its partner, the Janata Dal Secular.
Sumalatha had met BJP leader SM Krishna but decided not to contest as a BJP candidate.
The national elections begin April 11 and Mandya votes on April 18th – and will be closely watched.
