Rajya Sabha Dy. Chair electios to see two ‘Haris’ competing

BK Hariprasad to challenge Harivansh Narayan Singh of NDA

New Delhi.

Election of the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha on August 9 is going to be quite interesting with two ‘Haris’ taking upon each other. While the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has fielded harivansh narayan Singh of JD-U, the Congress-led opposition has kept much in store by BK Hariprasad. It means, whosoever wins, Rajya Sabha would be ruled by a ‘Hari’ (of Hindu pantheon) after all.

Both Harivansh Narayan Singh and BK Hariprasad have filed their nomination papers on Wednesday. Members of Rajya Sabha will vote to choose one of them tomorrow.

Election of the new Deputy Chairperson was necessitated after former Deputy Chairperson PJ Kurien completed his tenure in June this year. M. Venkaiya Naidu, Chairman of the Rajya Sabha had declared the schedulr for the process of election on Moday. He had also decided that members can present Notice4 of Motion upro 12 noon on August 8.

Politicians have already got busy in campaigning for their respectve candidates. National President of BJP Amit Shah and JD-U leader Nitish Kumar have appealed to allies to to vote for their common candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh. Shiv Sena has been quick this time to announce its support for the NDA candidate.

however, the key to success in this election lies in the hands of Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which has got nine Rajya Sabbha members. If the party chooses to refrain from voting for any of the two candidates, then things could get a bit fishy for the BJP-led NDA.

BJD has made it clear that it’s considering the chances of remaining aloof during the election process since Lok Sabha and Odissa Assebly elections are slated to take place almost simultaneously next year. So, it could be very tough for the ruling party to go with any one of the candidates.
