Budget session of Punjab Assembly concludes; adjourned sine-die

The budget session of Punjab Assembly concluded on Friday and it was adjourned sine-die. In the eight days long session, there were thirteen bills passed which include The Khalsa University (Repeal) Bill,2017, The Punjab Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Bill 2017, The Punjab Agricultural Produce Markets (Amendment) Bill 2017 and among others.

Meanwhile, the assembly witnessed some unruly scene today during the question hour as members of the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal- BJP and Aam Aadmi Party staged walk out to protest against what they called the “denigration of Sikh principles”.

SAD-BJP and AAP legislators sought a debate on yesterday’s incident when the speaker ordered that legislators of the Aam Aadmi Party be taken out by marshals. In the scuffle, turbans of some of the members came off. The opposition parties described the incident as an attack on the religious sentiments” of the Sikh community.

Meanwhile, Speaker Rana P P Singh asked the opposition to stop raising slogans and assured them that he would take a decision on their demand. However, SAD-BJP members, followed by AAP, gathered near the speaker’s podium, raising slogans against the incident. Later, they trooped out of the house.

SAD president Sukhbir demanded apology from the speaker for yesterday’s incident. He also demanded an apology from Chief Minister Amarinder Singh as he was leader of the House.

During zero hour, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Brahm Mohnidra moved a privilege motion against former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal for using un-parliamentary language against the Speaker and insulting the chair. The Treasury benches even demanded registration of FIR against Mr Badal. The motion was passed by the house.
