Canadian Premiere and Chief Minister’s to meet; more on Justin Trudeau’s Punjab visit
A meeting between visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh in Amritsar today is sure to be keenly watched by global media.
This has come amid speculations that the soft approach of the Canadian government towards the Khalistan supporters has been over shadowing the visit.
The Prime Minister was received by Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu at the Sri Guru Ramdas Jee International Airport today in Amritsar.
Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau visited the Golden Temple complex. Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu accompanied Trudeau to the Golden Temple complex.
Later, Trudeau will meet Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.
Chief Minister tweeted about the meeting, “On my way to Amritsar for an one-to-one meeting with Canadian Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau.”
Justin Trudeau will also visit the recently inaugurated Partition Museum. However, Trudeau will skip a visit to the Jallianwala Massacre Memorial during his three and a half-hour stay in the city.
Trudeau arrived in Amritsar from Mumbai and would leave for New Delhi this afternoon.
Tight security was put in place in and around Amritsar for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit to the Golden Temple complex.
Government security agencies and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) officials were busy yesterday trying to ensure the visit to the Sikh shrine went without hindrance or controversy.
According to police sources, Trudeau earlier asked local authorities to let him and his family, including three minor children, to enjoy the spirituality of the Golden Temple during the visit. >
