CEC cites relief efforts for delay in Gujarat election announcement

Amidst criticism as to why dates for Gujarat election have not been announced so far, Chief Election Commissioner has said that dates will soon be announced as the festival season and even the relief efforts in submerged parts of the state are almost done.

The CEC AK Joti cited that thousands of staffers needed to be deployed for state election and this could have delayed or hampered the relief efforts and this is why elections have so far not been announced. He however rubbished the allegations of postponing the election schedule to give advantage to the ruling BJP.

The powerful Election Commission has been accused by the opposition Congress of colluding with the government to delay the schedule for the election in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state to allow him to make announcements and launch massive projects to influence voters into supporting his party.

The BJP has governed Gujarat uninterrupted for nearly two decades.

Yesterday, the PM launched a 650-crore ferry that links Saurashtra to south Gujarat; the roll-on roll-off ferry service covers 31 kilometres by sea. PM Modi has been campaigning extensively in the state, announcing an assortment of big bang infrastructure projects.
