Central govt tells top court, dilution of SC/ST act ‘damaging’ country

With this the government urged the top court to immediately revoke the changes made to the Act

In a fix on the Supreme Court order on the SC/ST act and the demand from political parties, the central government today told the Supreme Court it has been misled into thinking it has the power to legislate.

The government also said that ‘dilution’ of the SC/ST act is damaging the country.

With this the government urged the top court to immediately revoke the changes made to the Act.

It need be mentioned that the apex court had ordered ban on automatic arrests and registration of criminal cases under the SC/ST Act.

This had angered the Dalit community and many of the political outfits who then staged protests on April 2.

The central government had by then filed a review petition but the top court then also refused to stay the ruling.
