Chhattisgarh Women’s Commission has written to all the district Collectors and directed them to ensure secrecy of identities of rape victims.
The letter also directs that any violation of the directive be met with legal consequences for the violators.
The letter has been written by Chhattisgarh Women’s Commission chief Harshita Pandey where in it has been mentioned that law mandates that identities of rape victims cannot be made public.
She writes that however, there have been cases in the recent past where the identities of such victims have gone public.
She said that media houses in certain cases and social media platforms have been used to propagate the identity of the rape victim.
Pandey went on that in such cases, the victims have had to face tremendous social and mental ordeal.
Thus, she writes, it is of paramount importance that the identities of such victims be kept confidential at any cost.
