Chhattisgarh could soon join in other states to implement death punishment to guilty of raping minors below 12 yrs of age.
In the aftermath of Kathua horror, various states are contemplating such a law and Chhattisgarh is one of them.
The context in the case of Chhattisgarh is that the state women’s commission has written a letter in this regard to Chief Secretary of the state.
The letter speaks that the POCSO act be amended to include death punishment instead of lifer for the guilty of raping below 12 yrs minor.
The letter mentions that cases where minors below 12 yrs of age have been targeted have surged in past months.
This calls for stricter provisions in law on the lines of what has been implemented in Haryana state.
Chhattisgarh Women’s Commission chairman Harshita Pandey said that horrific crimes are being carried out with children of 12 yrs or below that age and this calls for stringent punishment to act as deterrence.
She said that this might lead to curbing of such ghastly crimes.>
