Chhattisgarh Cong slams state govt; over ‘losing’ Mahanadi issue on tribunal front
Chhattisgarh Congress has slammed the state government for its ‘failure’ on Mahanadi river issue ongoing between Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
Party leaders feel that with central government constituting a tribunal as per demand of the Odisha government proves that Chhattisgarh could not defend the state’s position on the issue properly.
Party opined that this has jeopardized the interests of the Chhattisgarh farmers.
It need be mentioned that 86 percent of the catchment area of the Mahanadi river is in Chhattisgarh but the state utilizes mere 3.5 percent of the water resources available.
Congress alleged that Odisha utilizes as high as 14 percent of the Mahanadi river resources and rest of the 82 percent flows into sea without usage.
Congress said that after Indravati river, the state government lost on the Mahanadi river issue as well to neighboring Odisha.
It need be mentioned that Chhattisgarh is due to state election later this year while the national election is scheduled for mid next year and this issue might prove costly for the incumbent government.
