Amid ongoing dispute between Chhattisgarh and Odisha on the issue of sharing of Mahanadi river water, the Water Resources Department Secretary Sonmoni Borah is said to have written to the department Engineer-in-Chief HR Kutare on the need to provide data of water flow from Chhattisgarh to Odisha.
In his letter, Borah has said that department needs to ensure regular data disbursement on the flow of water ahead of Basantpur barrage right upto the Hirakud dam in Odisha.
Expressing his objections on the issue, the secretary has directed that the department needs to ensure that data of water flow needs to be maintained at the level of Chief Engineer.
He insisted that such data also needs to be analyzed in month or two so that the government can be briefed on the same as and when it becomes a issue.
It has also emerged in the letter that barrages instituted after Basantpur barrage apparently do not have gauging mechanism installed and that it should be arranged at the earliest.
The Secretary also said that other water sources that may merge into the Mahanadi river after Basanpur barrage but into the limits of Chhattisgarh also needs to be identified and water flow gauged.
With the dispute raging between the two states on water flow in Mahanadi and sharing mechanism, the data as summoned by the Water Resources Secretary is crucial, sources said.
