Citing SC order, directive issued to media not to disclose identity of ‘rape victim’

The Supreme Court of India had issued guidelines regarding the non-disclosure of the identity of the ‘rape’ victims-minors or adults.

The Apex Court had in its directives issued to the Union Home and Women and Child Development Ministries, all State Governments and Union Territories on 29th December 2018 had stated that ‘ not disclose the identity of the ‘rape’ victims.

Women and Child Development Department Director said that print media, electronic media and social media should not publicize any news disclosing the identity of the rape victim whether she is a minor or adult.

The victim is already traumatized so caution should be maintained.

As per the Supreme Court guidelines in the -First Information Report (F.I.R) and POCSO- the crimes will not be placed under Public Domain. The police officers should place the documents in sealed cover to protect the identity of the victims.

It is the responsibility of all the concerned officers to protect the identity of the ‘rape’ victims as per the directives issued by the Apex Court. Under no circumstances the identity of the victim be disclosed.
