Congress party demanded that Central government needs to file a review petition in the supreme court after the top court made a ruling in the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The court had said that preventing misuse of the law as under existing provisions is necessary.
The current provisions require that merely filing a complaint under the SC/ST Act empowers the police to immediately arrest an accused.
While many have argued that the law is often abused to blackmail officials into submission, Congress party said that the law may be open to misuse. >
