Congress leader writes to Modi on Gir lion deaths, said this

Congress leader went ahead and called it an example of "ecological neglect" by the state government

Amid the Gir lion deaths causing nation wide concerns, the senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue.

He is said to have suggested measures to tackle large-scale deaths of Asiatic lions in Gujarat’s Gir forest.

The Congress leader went ahead and called it an example of “ecological neglect” by the state government.

Among the measures he suggested to save lions were to expand eco-sensitive zones to 10 kilometres from protected areas of Gir National Park.

He also batted for better healthcare facilities for the big cats.

Ahmed Patel is also known to have suggested creation of a Rs 1000-crore fund for protection of Gujarat’s lions on lines of Project Tiger.

At least 23 lions, all from a single area in Gir forest, have died over the past three weeks due to various reasons.
