Congress Pres, Sonia Gandhi visit Sevagram, on Gandhi Jayanti

This was to mark the 149th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the Congress president Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders participated in a prayer meeting at Sevagram Ashram in Maharashtra today.

This was to mark the 149th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh along with many of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) members paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Bapu Kuti.

It needs to be mentioned that Bapu Kuti used to be residence of the Father of the Nation during his last years.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi went ahead and planted a sapling in the ashram as well.

Incidentally, the sapling was planted only next to the tree which his father and former prime minister late Rajiv Gandhi had planted on this day in 1986.

The Congress leadership has converged in the Sevagram village to attend a meeting of the Congress Working Committee.

It is the highest decision-making body of the party, to be held here after more than 70 years.

The Quit India movement was launched in Mumbai on August 8, 1942.
