In a major development, the top court has asked the central government to consider making it compulsory for families to disclose wedding expenditure.
The court stated that government may consider amending laws for this purpose, if the need be.
It is said that arrangement could be that both sides in the marital alliance disclose expenses in the wedding to a competent officer.
The apex court observed that the move will discourage demands of dowry and will also help curb the false cases under the dowry prohibition laws.
It further said that a part of the wedding expenditure could even be deposited in the wife’s bank account to meet certain future exigencies.
The court issued a notice to the central government on the issue.
The issue came up as the Supreme Court was hearing a marital dispute wherein the estranged wife had levelled various allegations against the husband and his family.
