Customs deptt seizes over 2.5 kgs gold; from five people at Chennai airport; heres more
The Customs Department’s intelligence unit was tipped off after which it seized a consignment of over 2.5 kg of gold worth that is estimated at around Rs 90 lakhs.
The department has made the arrests of people involved in this connection at the Chennai airport.
Customs officials said that they nabbed 26-year-old Cheriya Parambath Ansar, who arrived here from Dubai, and seized 829 grams of gold worth Rs 25 lakh from him. The accused was thereafter arrested as well.
Similarly, the officials also two women Ummal Bajria (69) and Halima Nachiya (47) who arrived from Dubai and seized 492 grams of gold (worth Rs 28 lakh) concealed under their burkha.
In two other incidents, the customs officials went on to seize more gold consignment.
It was in the fifth incident, that 40 yr old Byrozkhan Sulaiman was arrested after 535 grams of gold worth Rs 16 lakh was seized from him upon his arrival from Bangkok.
The enforcement agencies suspect a racket to be at work and is probing the seizures.>
