PT Usha lashed out at a section of the Indian media, stating that the athletes who are winning laurels at the ongoing Commonwealth Games should not be categorized on the basis of their regional identities.

Usha wrote through her Twitter account and questioned the tendency of reporters to point out the states of the victorious players, while also saying that the same is not followed in countries such as the United States or Australia.

She asked whether athletes are referred to from their respective regions in the US or Australia, highlighting that the issue is prevalent only in India.

Her tweet read: “Reporters: Haryana boy wins,Delhi girl does it….Chennai girl – Punjab boy!!! We could do without the states?

Have you heard USA report of a Florid boy winning or a Texas girl? Or Australia go like – Melbourne girl wins? #noboundries #onenation” (sic)

Usha’s tweet gained significant traction in no time, with the athlete also responding to a number of users to put her viewpoint forward. She encouraged her followers to not pay heed to such stories, tweeting, “Let’s not buy it and they (media) won’t sell it.”

She also urged people to change their mindset, adding, “Let’s change with ourselves and our family and friends, change society and it will continue to change.”Fans were also quick to point out the reference to Shah Rukh Khan’s popular dialogue from the sports movie ‘Chak De! India’, where in a scene, he urges his team to look beyond their respective states and focus on playing for their country.

Usha’s tweet also garnered a response from Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who echoed the same sentiments and tweeted, “India and Indians win each and every time our flag goes up.”

The response generated by Usha’s post is certainly a sign that a number of people across the country fell strongly about the issue and she has done well to highlight it. Rathore’s reply is also praiseworthy as he also endorsed Usha’s point of view.
