Dam collapse in Brazil leads to 50 people killed, many missing

In a tragic incident, close to 50 people got killed by the collapse of a dam at an iron mine in the southwestern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

It is said that Brumadinho Mayor pointed out that further details could not be ascertained due to the rapidly changing situation.

According to another media report, firefighters managed to rescue 90 people in the disaster-hit area.

A number of helicopters have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operation with some areas of the Brumadinho municipality having been evacuated.

It is speculated that the dam collapse may have been the result of spillage of 3 million cubic meters of waste.

It is also feared that approximately 345 people reportedly went missing following the incident.
