With tempers running high post the firing incident of yesterday, the issue of copper smelter of the Sterlite industries is now national debate.

However, the Madurai bench of Madras High Court has stayed the construction of a new copper smelter by Sterlite industries in Thoothukudi.

It need be mentioned that just a day earlier, at least 11 people, including two women and a teenager, were killed and 20 others grievously injured after police reportedly opened fire on the anti-Sterlite protests.

The agitation had been in Thoothukudi on Tuesday.

Another 100 people are believed injured during clashes between police and protesters, with official estimates claiming that 20,000 people took to the streets.

It is said that the police placed barricades and resorted to mild lathi-charge to confine the protesters to their localities.

Meanwhile, the crowd turned violent, damaging over 25 two-wheelers and at least three government jeeps.
