Despite headed for election year; govt may target lakh crore from disinvestment

Despite heading into an election year, there is likelihood that central government may target disinvestment even more aggressively.

According to some estimates, the government may target to the tune of a lakh crore for year 2018-19.

This would be to unleash the growth in equity markets and raise higher revenues in the year before the general elections in 2019.

While revenue receipts are critical for government’s aim to meet the fiscal target and to provide expenditure boost to the economy, Budget 2018-19 will be the last full year Budget of the current government.

Sources say that the government may even set a target of more than Rs 1 lakh crore to be raised through disinvestment in 2018-19.

The government has met its ambitious disinvestment target for the first time ever in 2017-18 and has mobilized a record Rs 91,253 crore till date as against the target of Rs 72,500 crore for the year.
