Ranchi : Gujarat’s medal hopes in the individual section ended, in the ongoing 79th Senior Inter-State and National TT championships at Ranchi, when Devesh Karia went down to A Sharath Kamal in the quarterfinal of the men’s singles.
Devesh had entered quarters with a strong upset win over seventh seed Subhajit Saha in the third round. The southpaw followed it with yet another memorable win, this time over Anirban Nandi. Devesh needed five games 12-10 11-8 7-11 11-6 11-3 to set last-eight clash with Kamal.
After slow start, Devesh did put up a good fight and even won a game but Kamal’s experience and skills proved too hot to handle. Sharath won 11-2 11-5 9-11 12-10 13-11.
The veteran paddler, Sharath was also responsible for exit of Manush Shah, Sports Authority of Gujarat supported Manush, who had sent second seed Arjun Ghosh packing in the third round, lost to arguably best paddler of all time of India, Sharath 6-11 8-11 7-11 7-11.
However, Manav Thakkar, who now plays for PSPB, ensured there is something for Gujaratis to cheer about. The Surati lost to A Amalraj in a closely fought semifinal 11-6 20-18 9-11 11-13 7-11 10-12. In quarterfinals Manav had beaten Raj Mondal 7-11 11-6 9-11 11-4 11-7 8-11 11-3.
Another Surti, who represents PSPB, Harmeet Desai ended the competition as quarterfinalist. He lost his last-8 match against A Amalraj.>
