The worst fears of the followers of the DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi came true as the five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu breathed his last in the Kauvery hospital today.
He is said to have passed away at around 6.10 pm on Tuesday.
Earlier itself, the hospital had reported that decline in his health has been recorded after which his followers had once again begun gathering outside the hospital.
The veteran of the Indian politics had for six decades dominated the political scene both at state and national level.
The President of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi too have condoled the passing away of the Tamil Nadu veteran politician.
The 94-year-old leader was admitted to the hospital on July 28 after he contracted urinary tract infection and developed a high fever.
It need be recalled that for the past more than a year, Karunanaidhi had been in and out of hospital while recovering from a long ailment.
He had also been living a secluded life with hardly any public appearances.
During the last stretch of his illness, President Ram Nath Kovind as well as Vice President Venkiah Naidu and a number of political leaders across party lines visited him.
The passing away of Karunanidhi and earlier the Jayalalithaa has left a massive political vacuum in the Tamil Nadu politics.>
