With contention growing over the article 35(A), the former Chief Minister and veteran leader Farooq Abdullah has said that his party will boycott the state and general elections if the central government doesn’t come clean on the issue.
The Article 35 (A), it need be recalled, is a constitutional provision that defines permanent residents of the state.
It need be mentioned that National Conference has already announced it will boycott the upcoming local body elections in Jammu and Kashmir over Article 35A.
The Article 35A is the provision that bars outsiders from owning property in Jammu and Kashmir.
The matter is pending before the Supreme Court which deferred the hearing till January 2019 after the state authorities cited possible law and order problems in holding municipal and Panchayat elections.
The state administration has announced plans to conduct municipal elections from October 1 and Panchayat elections from November.
Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party(PDP), the other major party in Jammu and Kashmir that ruled the state till recently with the BJP, has also expressed its reservations about the local body polls.>
