First Gujarat State Ranking TT starts in Surat

Hardik, Divya make it to the main draw

Surat : State Table Tennis seasoned kicked-off with with the Men’s and Women’s Qualifying rounds of the Late Bharat V Jariwala Memorial First Gujarat State Ranking Tournament in Surat on Tuesday. More than 450 paddlers in ten different categories are in fray.

For the first time introduced Qualifying rounds, where top-16 made it to the main draw in the draw of 64. Qualifying round was held in round robin format with three players forming one group. Topper from each group made it to the main draw.

Rest 26 made it to the main draw through qualifying rounds. Among those who cleared the qualifying round hurdle were veteran paddlers Hardik Bhatt, Mihir Gandhi and Mitul Vyas among others. Hardik Bhatt made a comeback after taking sabbatical of one year. Hardik defeated Deep Tank 11-3 11-3 11-6 and Manoj Makwana 11-7 11-8 11-4 to top his group.

Meanwhile, Mihir Gandhi shrugged off challenges from Maulik Jadhav and Rahul Khemchandani to advance to the main draw. on the other hand, Mitul Vyas made it at the expense of Chirag Gandha and Rishi Ranjan. From the qualifying rounds, 26 made it to the main draw.

In the Women’s section former state champion Divya Gohil, who had taken a break after giving birth to her first child last year, returned with same vigar. Pitted against Mansi Parmar and Himali Gosain in Group 7 of qualifying round, Divya was too strong for the young girls. Divya defeated Mansi 11-2 11-4 11-3 and Himali by a 11-3 11-6 11-9 scoreline.
