In yet another case of mob lynching, as many as five people have been arrested for allegedly killing a man on suspicion of vehicle theft in Manipur’s Imphal West district.
Police sources said that the incident sparked fears of communal violence in the area as the victim belonged to a minority community.
Police sources said that the villagers suspected few people traveling in a car and began beating them.
The attackers were the residents of Tharoijam village.
while the 26-year-old Farooq Khan was beaten to death and his car destroyed, two people accompanying him managed to escape.
The villagers also demanded that the attackers nabbed by the police be released.
Thirteen people who attacked the trio have been identified and will be arrested soon, police added.
But the minority groups claimed that the man was innocent and have asked the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
BJP-ruled Manipur is among a number of states that has witnessed a spate of mob-killings in recent months.>
