In a major development, a Delhi court convicted former diplomat Madhuri Gupta of passing secret information to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence.
The case is of when she was posted in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad in 2010.
The conviction was pronounced by Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma.
Madhuri Gupta was held guilty under various provisions of the Official Secrets Act for criminal conspiracy and wrongful communication of information protected under the law.
The court will hear arguments on the quantum of sentence on Saturday.
The court, however, acquitted her of stringent provisions of the Official Secrets Act with a maximum punishment of 14 years as the prosecution could not prove it.
Gupta was the second secretary (press and information) at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.>
