GJM-sponsored indefinite shutdown hits normal life in Darjeeling

Normal life continued to be crippled, Internet services remained suspended as the GJM-sponsored indefinite shutdown in Darjeeling hills continues. Except pharmacies, all other shops, hotels and restaurants are closed.
Meanwhile Police have registered an FIR against Gorkha Janmukti Morcha Chief, Bimal Gurung charging him of murder and criminal conspiracy.
The murder charges are related to the death of three Morcha supporters on Saturday. GJM claimed the supporters died in police firing. But state top police administration rejected any death in police firing.
As per information received, the indefinite shutdown in Darjeeling hills has hit hard its famed tea industry with the premium quality ‘second flush’ tea leaves going waste causing heavy losses to the garden owners and putting at stake the livelihood of more than two lakh tea-garden workers.
Darjeeling is home to 87 tea gardens and the ongoing shutdown has pushed them to the brink. The tea garden owners feel ​that they will be losing 45 per cent of their yearly revenue.
