With questions being raised by the Supreme Court judges over the government withholding the appointment of two SC judges, the government is said to be considering clearing the appointment of senior advocate Indu Malhotra as Supreme Court judge.
It is also being said that the collegium’s another recommendation to elevate Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court KM Joseph to the apex court may remain on hold.
It was on 22 January that the Supreme Court collegium’s file recommending the elevation of Joseph and Malhotra reached the law ministry.
After processing the file in the first week of February, the recommendations were kept in abeyance.
The reason being cited was that the government wanted to elevate only Malhotra.
But now, the government is considering to go ahead with the appointment of Malhotra and continue to keep on hold the elevation of Joseph.
The government feels that while recommending the name of Joseph, the collegium has disregarded seniority and regional representation.>
