With depleting fighter squadrons becoming a concern for the defence strategists of India, the government may finally come out with fresh request for information (RFI) today for procurement of 110 fighter jets.
The fighter jets need to be inducted in the Indian Air Force that is fast losing its fighter squadrons in the wake of no fresh induction of aircrafts.
Air Force sources said that while issuance of the RFI is the first step, this will shortly be followed by request for proposal (RPF) or a formal tender which will then lead to evaluations, technical trials and commercial negotiations.
It need be mentioned that the India Air Force needs to have approved 42 squadrons at least with two front war now more possible than ever.
But the IAF is left with about 31 squadrons.
To meet the emergency requirements, it was in year 2015 that New Delhi signed a contract with France to buy 36 fighters as an emergency measure to keep up a credible deterrence.
It is said that IAF is not keen on F-16 even though the assembly line has been offered to India.
The RFI being issued clearly says that fighter jets need to be manufactured in India.
