While the north eastern states have long been demanding the need to have different time zones in the country, the central government so far has not made a decision in this regard as yet.
The government made it clear once again as it was responding to the a query from BJP Member of Parliament Varun Gandhi, the Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan reiterated that government has not made up is mind on the issue.
However, the Minister did say that a high-level committee in 2002 had been set up and it had not recommended implementation of two-time zones in India because it would be very complex to implement.
It need be mentioned that many of the large countries have adopted multiple time zones.
The list includes United States, Russia.
Votaries of separate time zones argue that having a single time zone hampers productivity in east and northeastern states.
