Govt’s major move in wake of Kalaignar’s passing away

It also goes to show that Tamil Nadu politics has had an impact across the country in some way or the other.

In an unprecedented move, the Government of India has informed the state governments as well as Union Territories to hoist national flag at half mast as mark of respect for the departed leader M Karunanidhi of Tamil Nadu.

The information issued from the Government of India has been signed in by one Satpal Chouhan, an additional secretary to Government of India.

Why this is unprecedented is that the DMK patriarch commanded such high regard amid the national polity despite being a regional party leader.

It also goes to show that Tamil Nadu politics has had an impact across the country in lot of ways.

The far-sightedness of the departed leader is also reflective from the fact that he had announced his younger son Stalin as political heir quite in advance.

With this step alone, he has ensured that his legacy continues to live on much beyond his mortal life.

The stature of the Tamil Nadu based veteran leader could also be ascertained from the fact that both houses of Parliament were adjourned after paying respects to the departed leader.

This is even as M Karunanidhi never has been a member of either of houses.

Political heavyweights including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and many others from national and state politics made sure to personally pay respects to Kalaignar as he embarked on his final journey.
