HC asks Maharashtra govt to provide numbers on how many inmates are below age of 45 in prisons, how many of them vaccinated

A Division Bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G.S. Kulkarni was hearing a suo motu Public Interest Litigation concerning the increase of COVID-19 patients in prisons.

The Bombay High Court has asked the Maharashtra Government to provide numbers on how many inmates are below the age of 45 in prisons across the state and how many of them have been vaccinated.

Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni told the court that 1,248 additional prisoners have been released of which 121 additional prisoners have been released on emergency parole.

There are 11 additional temporary prisons, three additional COVID Care Centres for prisoners. He also said an additional 156 mobile phones are purchased for inmates to call their family.
