As the controversy over the fugitive dimantaire Mehul Choksi receiving an Antiguan citizenship deepens, it is now learnt that the Antigua government had been given clearance certificate by police and even the Ministry of External Affairs.
The shocking revelation also went ahead to claim that the guy was given citizenship after stringent background checks.
It also emerged that the Antigua government agency while conducting background checks on Choksi did come about info that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) had initiated investigations against him twice.
It then also figured that the cases have been closed.
In a detailed statement, the citizenship authority said the businessman’s application was received in May 2017 with necessary documentary requirements including a police clearance certificate.
It said as Choksi’s application was subjected to stringent background checks as is done with all applications submitted to the unit.
The CIU also dismissed a reported claim by the CBI that indicated that the Interpol had made no direct contact with the Antigua authorities on Choksi.>
