Himachal Pradesh’s new CM – Jairam Thakur
BJP named Jairam Thakur as the next chief minister of Himachal Pradesh after the party swept the recent state assembly election, routing the earlier Congress government.
Thakur’s name was announced after a meeting of BJP MLAs was convened, with all unanimously deciding in his favour.
The race for the chief ministership opened up after the BJP’s initial choice, Prem Kumar Dhumal, suffered a shock defeat in the polls, losing to his once-protege Rajinder Rana of the Congress.
While supporters called for his appointment, Dhumal himself said he was out of the race on Saturday.
Union minister JP Nadda was also a contender for the post.
A former state BJP chief, 52-year-old Thakur has won from the Seraj constituency five times in a row.>
