How to perform Ganesh Chaturthi Puja at home:

It is that time of the year, when all the ‘bappa’ bhakts (devotees) are eager to play host to the Lord by inviting him to their homes. The freshness in the breeze and the picture perfect weather strikes a perfect balance between mind, body and soul. In order to please the Ganapati, and make him visit your abode year on year, we tell you how to perform the special ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’ puja (prayer).

Importance of Ganesh puja

Lord Ganesh is the son of Lord Shiva and Maa Shakti. He is the first one to be worshipped in Hinduism before commencing any puja or starting a new venture. He is the remover of obstacles and therefore worshipping Ganesh can clear the hurdles to progress and bless the devotees with clarity of thought, strength, courage, prosperity and success.

On the day when you wish to do the puja, wake up early in the morning and take bath. During bath, invoke the presence of sacred rivers in the water you bathe with. To do this, chant the mantra, “Gangecha Yamunaschaiva Godaavari Saraswati Narmade Sindhu Kaveri Jalesmin Sannidham Kuru.” After bath, clean the home, puja altar and prepare for the puja.

Start the chaturthi puja by bringing the ‘Ganapati’ idol home

We start the chaturthi puja by bringing the ‘Ganapati’ idol home. The chaturthi is believed to be the most auspicious day for getting the idol of our favourite lord home.

The main puja requirements

After placing the newly-bought Ganapati idol home and that too following the exact rituals—there are certain requirements necessary to be met with. For example, we need red flowers, druva grass blades, modak (jaggery filled sweet), coconut, red chandan (sandalwood paste), incense and aggarbattis.

On a raised platform or the altar of your home, place a wooden plank and spread a white cloth on it. Place an idol or picture of Lord Ganesh on it. Decorate it with flower garlands, turmeric paste, kumkum, sandal paste and other fragrant materials. Light the lamp and pray Lord Ganesh to be installed in the idol or picture to receive your puja.

Before the starting of the puja, pray Lord Ganesh to remove the obstacles to the puja and move it to completion. Take some water and flowers in hands and chant the following mantra for the purpose:- Aum Gan Ganapatye Namah Vakra Tunda Mahaakaaya Suryakoti Samaprabha Nirvighnam Kurume Deva Sarva Kaaryeshu Sarvataa Shri Vighna Vinaashakaaya Namaha, sarvobachaaraan samarpayaami.

Meditate on Lord Ganesh and chant the following Ganesh Bheej mantra 21 times. “Om Gam Ganapataye Namah” On the idol or picture, sprinkle some water and say the following. Asmin Bimbe Sumukham Shri Mahaganapatim Aavaahayaami (Let Lord Ganesh be installed in this image). Then offer the seat, water, flowers, turmeric paste, sandal paste, kumkum, durva grass, arka flowers and other offerings you have one by one.

Chant the Bheej mantra of Ganesh given above 108 times and offer durva grass and arka flowers during the puja. These are highly auspicious ones to offer Lord Ganesh. Chant the following Slokas of Ganesh:- Gajaananam Bhuuta Ganaadi Seevitam Kapitta Jambu Phalasaara Pakshitam Umaa Sutam Shokavinaasha Kaaranam Namaami Vighneshwara Paada Pankajam.

At the end of the puja and offerings, do arati for Ganesh with camphor flame. Do namaskar and pray for the blessings of Ganesh. Prostrate in front of the altar and offer some flowers at the feet of Lord Ganesh to conclude the puja. Distribute the Prasad among the gathering or your family members. On the next day morning, light the lamp, offer some flowers and thank Lord Ganesh for visiting your home and accepting the puja and blessing you.
