In yet another move aimed at gender empowerment, the IITs have announced that they will add 779 more seats in the new academic session for women applicants only.
The addition of seats would be besides the usual intake of candidates otherwise.
The decision was taken only last year by the IIT Council and now a final number of “supernumerary seats” have been announced.
It is also said that the number of seats is likely to vary each year.
Sources confirmed that the quota will be increased every academic year from this year till the number of female students touches 20 percent.
At present, it is said that women make up for less than ten percent of the student strength in the IITs.
It is believed that 779 seats to be added would include 113 seats to the IIT Kharagpur followed by IIT-Dhanbad (95 seats), IIT-Kanpur (79), IIT-BHU (76), IIT-Roorkee (68), IIT-Delhi (59), IIT-Bombay (58) and IIT Guwahati (57).>
