Gujarat: The Gujarat High Court on Friday suggested that the state government collect a fine of Rs 1000 from persons moving around on the streets without face masks to curb spread of coronavirus infection. The bench of Chief Justice Vikram Nath and Justice JB Pardiwala was hearing a suo motu petition and other PILs related to the Covid-19 situation in the state.
Ahigher fine of up to Rs 1,000 should be recovered from violators of the mask rule to break the chain of infection of the deadly virus, the court advised Advocate General Kamal Trivedi when senior counsel Anshin Desai raised the issue of lack of adherence to mask and social distancing rules during public gathering. Currently, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) charges Rs500 while the city police Rs200 from the persons who are caught without face masks.
During Friday’s online hearing, the bench said people will start wearing masks if the penalty is increased to Rs 1,000. It said Rs 1,000 as penalty might sound harsh but is necessary for the good of the people.
